Liverpool Biennial
Arriving back in Liverpool, for my first major commission after Eurovision, and the city looked a bit flat. Obviously, in reality, it wasn't and the weather wasn’t helping. Nothing had actually changed and it was still lovely Liverpool but after 9 days of glitter, pop and the most colourful music crowd I’ve ever seen filling the streets, it just felt a bit flat. So, in many ways, the Biennial was the perfect antidote and over 4 days, bit by bit, gallery by gallery, the colour just crept back in. I love documenting the Biennial as it’s always the unknown but this one was one of my favourites to take pictures of, for all kinds of reasons. I mean the 2021 Biennial was one of my first shoots after the lockdowns, and the relief to be out and about again was amazing. But looking back on it I just remember the social distancing and masks in galleries. And of course no parties! But this week was something different all together and as much as it’s all about the work, I loved seeing the Biennial open again at all speed and I got to see so much over the four day shoot which started off documenting the empty spaces before welcoming the public later in the week and then photographing some fantastic performance pieces. I’m now looking at my diary and trying to work out which exhibits I should visit again when I’m on a camera free day because, even though it’s on for months, it always seems to be a last minute rush to see things again. And if you’ve still not been, you’ve got until September 17th. 😉
